Evaluation and Uncertainty Estimation of the Latest Radar and Satellite Snowfall Products Using SNOTEL Measurements over Mountainous Regions in Western United States

چکیده
Snow contributes to regional and global water budgets, and is of critical importance to water resources management and our society. Along with advancement in remote sensing tools and techniques to retrieve snowfall, verification and refinement of these estimates need to be performed using ground-validation datasets. A comprehensive evaluation of the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) snowfall products and Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) (IMERG) precipitation products is conducted using the Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) daily precipitation and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) datasets. Severe underestimations are found in both radar and satellite products. Comparisons are conducted as functions of air temperature, snowfall intensity, and radar beam height, in hopes of resolving the discrepancies between measurements by remote sensing and gauge, and finally developing better snowfall retrieval algorithms in the future.

The Limitations of the WSR-88D Radar Network for Quantitative Precipitation Measurement over the Coastal Western United States
In 1996, the last of the 136 operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) Next Generation Radar radar sites in the contiguous United States was put into operation, completing a major component of the National Weather Service (NWS) modernization program. This radar network, along with improvements in profilers and weather satellites, represents a continuing shift from in situ to...
متن کاملHydrological Utility and Uncertainty of Multi-Satellite Precipitation Products in the Mountainous Region of South Korea
Satellite-derived precipitation can be a potential source of forcing data for assessing water availability and managing water supply in mountainous regions of East Asia. This study investigates the hydrological utility of satellite-derived precipitation and uncertainties attributed to error propagation of satellite products in hydrological modeling. To this end, four satellite precipitation pro...

Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products from the next-generation National Mosaic and QPE system (Q2) are cross-compared to the operational, radar-only product of the National Weather Service (Stage II) using the gauge-adjusted and manual quality-controlled product (Stage IV) as a reference. The evaluation takes place over the entire conterminousUnited States (CONUS) fromDecember 20...
متن کاملCharacteristics of Large Snowfall Events in the MontaneWestern United States as Examined using Snowpack Telemetry (SNOTEL)Data
Daily snow water equivalent records from the snowpack telemetry archive are used to assess spatiotemporal characteristics of large snowfall events over the montane western United States. The largest mean annual (leading) events are found in the Pacific Northwest and Sierra Nevada. The mean leading event lasting up to 72 hours typically accounts for 10-23% of the water equivalent of annual snowf...

One of the most common natural phenomena occurring in mountainous regions of the world is landslide which causes critical damages and is considered as a natural disaster. Iran is a country which annually suffers from this disaster and its consequent damage of about 500 billion Rial. Over the last 15 years, an increasing number of researches have aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the im...
